Meet Lauren

Hello kindred spirits, brides and lingerie lovers.

I’m supposed to give you some insight into who I am and how I got to this place in my life, but as a creative human, it’s not so easy to write a puff piece on yourself! But this is my story…

I am a South African, dachshund obsessed, tea drinking “sew-a-holic” with an unwavering infatuation with the luxury lace aisle. I have a serious love for lingerie, bridal gowns and generally anything created with delicate textiles.

Most days, I can be found in my studio with a hot “cuppa” in hand (very important part of life to make me a happy person), embellishing garments, surrounded by four fur babies – each of whom you will come to meet and know individually – should we work together.

I just want to play with fabric and make beautiful things…”

Hello kindred spirits, brides and lingerie lovers.

I’m supposed to give you some insight into who I am and how I got to this place in my life, but as a creative human, it’s not so easy to write a puff piece on yourself! But this is my story…

Lauren’s Story

Lauren Judith-Anne officially launched in 2015, although Lauren’s sewing journey started at a much younger age and long before the completion of her 5 year degree from the Durban University of Technology. In 2007, aged fifteen, Lauren took up dancing and with her new found love for dance came an enthusiasm for the costumes worn by the professional dancers she so admired. Thus began Lauren’s passion for the most elaborate costumes and so the next four years were filled with much hand-stitching and beading (seams and all). This is still a signature move of hers, and friends will often walk into the house to find her sitting with needle and thread in hand. This love for creating spectacular garments reinforced what she already knew – that she was going to study fashion design and create pieces that women would swoon over!

Although Lauren was artistic throughout college, it was really her technical side that stood out and at the end of her studies she scooped the award for Best Technical Student in her graduating year. Her aptitude and adoration for the technical aspect of design meant that there was always a strong emphasis placed on patternmaking and garment detailing.

When Lauren finally made the decision to focus on handcrafted lingerie, she was strongly advised by a few of the “Big Fish” in the industry pond that it was a no-go zone and that she wouldn’t be successful. How do you make a strong-willed woman more determined? Tell her “You can’t!”

This only made the journey more appealing and now, three years later while Lauren is still crafting bespoke bridal gowns for one-of-a-kind brides, she has also just created her first ‘made-to-order” lingerie range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What price range should I be looking at for handcrafted lingerie?

Well, to be straight forward – there’s a reason you cannot purchase handcrafted pieces off of a rack in your nearest supermarket. Our pieces are individually made to order by hand and require extra care, so the cost of these beauties ranges from from R1500 upwards, depending on how extravagant your imagination is.

Do you work with plus sizes?

Yes of course! Due to our service being bespoke, we can create customised pieces based on cup shapes and desired silhouettes. We may vary styles though, to allow for the extra support required for larger cup sizes.

How do your sizes work, especially when it comes to your bras?

Our sizes depend on the specific piece selected, we have pieces such as camisoles, knickers and robes that are created with soft fabrics and are created as a dress size “32, 34…. And so on”. Then we have pieces such as push up bras and negligees that are created using solid cups, these foundations are sourced in bra sizes (eg: 32A) which can be slightly customized in the case should you not want push up bra padding.

Would you wear your lingerie under your wedding gown?

We do get asked this on a regular basis. Currently, our lingerie is mainly for “honeymoon” purposes (that is obviously if you are purchasing it in the bridal context) as most of our styles involve highly detailed embellishments and would most likely be seen through tight fitting gowns. For a wedding dress you would need to source shapewear as opposed to detailed lingerie.

How long does it take to create your handcrafted lingerie?

Our made-to-order lingerie usually requires approximately 3-4 weeks depending on our current orders and deadlines. Our custom pieces do take a bit longer as they are usually more detailed as well as being designed from scratch.

What price range should I be looking at for a custom wedding dress?

The cost of our wedding gowns vary depending on the style that is selected and the amount of hand stitching/beadwork required. However, we do suggest budgeting between R20,000 – R30,000 for a custom made Lauren Judith-Anne gown.

How far in advance should I be in contact to book a custom wedding dress?

As they say “the early bird catches the worm” so we do like to be working on your gown at least 5-6 months before the big day. This ensures that it is a stress-free and enjoyable journey for the bride.
